Architecture and Terrains of Water
In 2023 - our director Jaco Jonker started leading a research unit at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg.
In the wake of the devastating 2022-2023 floors around South Africa, the theme of interest of this research unit revolves around the deepening and increasingly exacerbated and contested terrains of water within South Africa. The research unit is looking at how architecture and urban design and planning can (and does) play an important role in the lives of people and communities living around rivers and lakes within in-land South Africa.
In 2023 the sites of research focus are the river systems of Johannesburg and Pretoria, and specifically the Harbeespoort Dam/Lake, and how current global and local events are shaping how these terrains are occupied.
